Van de Velde was born in Amsterdam on May 17, 1587. He studied with his father, Hans van de Velde the Elder, who was also a landscape painter. Van de Velde traveled to Italy in 1613, where he was influenced by the work of the Italian landscape painters Annibale Carracci and Domenichino. Van de Velde returned to the Netherlands in 1619 and settled in Haarlem. He became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1623.
Van de Velde's paintings are typically small, and they often depict scenes of the Dutch countryside. His paintings are characterized by their realistic depiction of nature, their use of light and atmosphere, and their often idyllic scenes. Van de Velde's paintings are often compared to the work of his contemporary, Jan van Goyen. However, Van de Velde's paintings are generally more detailed and more idealized than those of Van Goyen.
Van de Velde died in Haarlem on February 18, 1630. He was only 42 years old. However, he left behind a significant body of work that had a major influence on the development of Dutch landscape painting.
