Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. He led the country through the Civil War, abolished slavery, and preserved the Union. Lincoln was a complex and enigmatic figure, and his life and presidency have been the subject of much study and debate.

Early Life and Career

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas Lincoln, a farmer, and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Lincoln's early life was marked by poverty and hardship. He had little formal education, but he was a voracious reader and taught himself law.

In 1834, Lincoln moved to Illinois, where he began his political career. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives and the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1860, Lincoln was elected President of the United States.

The Civil War

The Civil War began in 1861, shortly after Lincoln took office. The war was fought between the Union (the Northern states) and the Confederacy (the Southern states). Lincoln's goal was to preserve the Union and to end slavery.

The Civil War was a bloody and protracted conflict. Lincoln faced many challenges during the war, including opposition from within his own party. However, he remained steadfast in his determination to win the war and to abolish slavery.

The Emancipation Proclamation

In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were free. The proclamation was a major turning point in the war, and it helped to galvanize support for the Union cause.

The Gettysburg Address

In 1863, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. The speech was given at the dedication of a cemetery for Union soldiers who had died at the Battle of Gettysburg. The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in American history. In the speech, Lincoln defined the purpose of the war as the preservation of the Union and the promotion of equality.

Lincoln's Assassination

Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer. Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. He died the following day.

Legacy
