The Life and Death of Gari Dingoes: Animal Publics
In her groundbreaking work, The Life and Death of Gari Dingoes: Animal Publics, environmental philosopher Deborah Bird Rose challenges us to rethink our relationship with animals. Drawing on a wide range of sources, from scientific research to Indigenous knowledge, Rose argues that animals are not simply objects to be used or exploited, but rather sentient beings with their own rights and interests.
Rose begins by exploring the concept of "animal publics." She argues that animals are not simply isolated individuals, but rather members of complex social communities. These communities have their own cultures, traditions, and forms of communication. Animals are capable of forming relationships with each other, and they have a deep understanding of the world around them.

Rose's work is particularly important in light of the current environmental crisis. As humans continue to destroy animal habitats and exploit animals for food, clothing, and entertainment, we are putting the entire planet at risk. Rose argues that we need to develop a new ethic of care for animals. We need to recognize that animals are not our property, but rather fellow creatures with whom we share the earth.
The Life and Death of Gari Dingoes is a powerful and moving book that will change the way you think about animals. Rose's work is essential reading for anyone who is interested in environmental philosophy, animal rights, or the future of our planet.
