As these three women navigate the challenges and triumphs of their lives, they confront issues of race, gender, and belonging. They grapple with the weight of societal expectations, the pain of loss, and the elusive quest for self-acceptance.
Kemi: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Resilience
Kemi's story is one of resilience and self-discovery. Having escaped an unwanted marriage in Nigeria, she finds herself in a foreign land where she must learn to navigate a new culture and forge a new life for herself. Along the way, she encounters both kindness and prejudice, and she must find the strength within herself to overcome the obstacles that stand in her path.
Through Kemi's journey, Åkerström explores the challenges faced by many African immigrants who leave their home countries in search of a better life. She delves into the complexities of cultural identity and the ways in which our past experiences shape who we are.
Korede: Finding a Sense of Belonging
Korede's story is a poignant exploration of identity and belonging. As a Swedish-Nigerian woman, she feels like an outsider in both worlds. She struggles to find her place in Swedish society, where she is often seen as too Black, and in Nigerian society, where she is seen as too Swedish.
Through Korede's journey, Åkerström examines the complexities of mixed-race identity and the challenges of finding a sense of belonging in a world that often categorizes people based on their race or ethnicity.
Adunni: A Search for Roots and Identity
Adunni's story is a quest for self-discovery and a search for her ancestral roots. As a Nigerian-American woman, she has always felt a disconnect from her African heritage. She travels to Nigeria in hopes of finding a sense of belonging and a deeper understanding of who she is.
Through Adunni's journey, Åkerström explores the importance of knowing one's history and culture. She delves into the ways in which our past shapes our present and the ways in which our sense of identity is intertwined with our ancestral roots.
