Early Life and Career

Edward "Mick" Mannock was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 24 May 1887. He was the son of Irish immigrants, and he grew up in a working-class family. Mannock left school at the age of 14 to work as a clerk. However, he soon realized that he wanted to be a pilot. In 1914, he joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC).

Mannock quickly proved to be a natural pilot. He was skilled, daring, and fearless. He soon began to score victories against the enemy. In April 1917, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in action. The citation for his VC reads:

> "For most conspicuous bravery, skill and determination. On the 7th April, 1917, during an offensive patrol, Captain Mannock attacked an enemy two-seater and shot it down in flames. Later, he attacked a formation of six enemy scouts, destroying one and driving down another out of control. He then attacked a third enemy aircraft and fired 100 rounds into it at close range. The enemy machine crashed, and Captain Mannock landed beside it and rescued the pilot, who was unhurt."

Mannock continued to score victories throughout the war. He became one of the most successful fighter pilots of all time. He was also a highly respected officer. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Free Download and the Military Cross.

Death and Legacy

Mannock was killed in action on 26 July 1918. He was shot down by an enemy fighter pilot while flying over the Western Front. He was just 31 years old.

Mannock's death was a great loss to the RFC. He was one of the most skilled and experienced fighter pilots in the world. His death was also a great loss to his family and friends.

Mannock's legacy continues to inspire people today. He is remembered as one of the greatest fighter pilots of all time. He was a brave, determined, and selfless man. He was a true hero.
