Early Life and Career

Edward "Mick" Mannock was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 24 May 1887. He was the son of Irish immigrants, and he grew up in a working-class family. Mannock left school at the age of 14 to work as a clerk. However, he soon realized that he wanted to be a pilot. In 1914, he joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC).

Mannock quickly proved to be a natural pilot. He was skilled, daring, and fearless. He soon began to score victories against the enemy. In April 1917, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in action. The citation for his VC reads:

Later, he attacked a formation of six enemy scouts, destroying one and driving down another out of control. He then attacked a third enemy aircraft and fired 100 rounds into it at close range. The enemy machine crashed, and Captain Mannock landed beside it and rescued the pilot, who was unhurt."
