Nuts! Stalingrad Heroes, All
In the annals of military history, few battles have been as bloody and brutal as the Battle of Stalingrad. Fought between the German Wehrmacht and the Soviet Red Army from July 1942 to February 1943, the battle raged for over six months and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.1 million people.
One of the most iconic moments of the battle came on November 19, 1942, when a group of American journalists were allowed to visit the ruins of the city. As they walked through the shattered streets, they came across a group of Soviet soldiers who were holding out in a makeshift bunker.

The journalists asked the soldiers how they were able to keep fighting in such hopeless conditions. One of the soldiers, a young man named Vasily Zaytsev, replied, "We're not fighting for ourselves. We're fighting for our country."
Zaytsev's words would later become a rallying cry for the Soviet people, who were inspired by the courage and determination of the Stalingrad defenders. The battle of Stalingrad was a turning point in the war, and the Soviet victory helped to ensure the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
