Early Life and Career
Roland Michel Barrin De La Galissoniere was born in Rochefort, France, on November 11, 1693. His father was a naval officer, and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Galissoniere received a classical education, and he entered the French navy at the age of 14. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the age of 30, he was a captain. In 1745, he was appointed governor of Guadeloupe, a French colony in the Caribbean. Governor of New France
In 1749, Galissoniere was appointed governor of New France. He arrived in Quebec City in August of that year, and he immediately began to implement a number of reforms. He also oversaw the construction of Fort Duquesne, which was a key French stronghold in the Ohio Valley. Fort Duquesne played a major role in the French and Indian War, which began in 1754.
