The Early Years

Bill Gross was born in 1953 in New York City. He grew up in a middle-class family and attended public schools. As a child, he was fascinated by science and technology. He spent countless hours building radios and other electronic devices. In high school, he started a computer club and taught himself how to program.

After graduating from high school, Gross attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science. He graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree. After graduation, he worked as a software engineer for a number of years. In 1981, he co-founded Idealab, a venture capital firm that invested in early-stage technology companies.

The Venture Capital Years

Idealab was one of the first venture capital firms to invest in the internet. Gross and his partners invested in a number of successful companies, including GoTo.com, Citysearch, and eToys. In 1999, Idealab went public. Gross became a billionaire.

After Idealab went public, Gross continued to invest in early-stage technology companies. He founded a number of other venture capital firms, including Highland Capital Partners and True Ventures. He also became a mentor to a number of young entrepreneurs, including Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber.

The Misfits
