Eddie Chapman was one of the most remarkable double agents of World War II. He worked for both the British and German intelligence services, and his exploits are the stuff of legend.
Early Life
Chapman was born in 1914 in England. He had a troubled childhood, and he left home at a young age to join the Merchant Navy. In 1939, he was arrested for burglary and sentenced to seven years in prison.
World War II
In 1940, Chapman was released from prison and joined the British Army. However, he soon became disillusioned with the war and decided to work for the Germans. He contacted the German Embassy in Lisbon and offered to spy for them.
The Germans were initially skeptical of Chapman, but he eventually convinced them of his loyalty. He was given the codename "Zigzag" and sent to England to gather intelligence.
Chapman's任務 was to gather information on British military installations and defenses. He also recruited other agents to work for the Germans.
In 1942, Chapman was arrested by the British. However, he managed to convince them that he was a double agent working for the British intelligence service. The British were initially skeptical, but they eventually came to believe Chapman's story.
Chapman continued to work for the British for the rest of the war. He provided them with valuable intelligence on German military plans and operations.
Post-War Life
After the war, Chapman returned to England. He married and had a family. He also wrote a book about his experiences as a double agent.
Chapman died in 1997 at the age of 82.
